Gillian Murgatroyd

About Me:

Hi, I’m Gillian, a qualified Play and Creative Arts Therapist. I specialise in supporting children aged 4 to 14 to understand, express, and manage their emotions — especially during times when life feels overwhelming or confusing.

My experience includes working in private practice, school-based services, charities, and organisations such as Victim Support and the Adoption Support Fund. I am also the author of Emotions at Play - a growing collection of therapeutic picture books, created to help children feel seen, supported, and understood.

Play is a child’s natural language. Through play, children show us their feelings and begin to make sense of their experiences. When we get alongside them and let them take the lead, play becomes a space where they can process their feelings and experiences in a way that feels safe and manageable. I use the interests of the young person, and creative tools to support children at their own pace. I also work closely with parents and carers, offering guidance and reassurance along the way.

I offer a free initial conversation, where you can tell me more about your young person and I can share how we might work together. I really look forward to meeting you.

I support children and young people with different feelings and challenges, such as:

  • Managing emotions, angry feelings, and emotional outbursts

  • Anxiety and separation anxiety

  • Attachment difficulties

  • Bereavement and loss

  • Bullying

  • Low confidence and self-esteem

  • Dealing with change and transition

  • Family changes, including separation and divorce

  • Support for LGBTQ+ young people

  • ADHD and being neurodiverse

  • Difficult experiences
