Michael Barrows

Family support counsellor, working with adults and  children (10+)

Neurodivergent-affirming therapist

My passion is working with people who are stilling find their place in the world. I feel it is Important for someone to have a sense of purpose or a sense of belonging in the world.

So, if you feel that you are struggling to find your place in the world, feel like something has always been different about you but never understood why?

Feeling that despite whatever you do, nothing changes?

I could offer that space to untangle it all and help you find some sense of direction again.

I. Since qualifying back in 2012, I have worked as a Family Support Worker and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), with my most recent role being in an Eating Disorders Team. I’ve equally done some teaching as well.

I’m a neurodivergent-affirming therapist offering a practical, personalised approach to therapy, combining counselling and psychology to support you in a way that best fits you.

I am someone who enjoys tabletop games and other geeky trends, so I enjoy audiobooks, games, and painting miniatures. I facilitate a painting group over in Halifax on a Monday evening. Being with a group who just enjoy being together over a shared interest just highlights the importance of belonging and its impact on wellbeing.

For the last 5 years my interests have been more towards working with adults, particularly those with social anxiety, loneliness, neurodivergence and general anxiety, this equally extends to my work with young people. I can also work with depression, bereavement, relational difficulties, anger and stress.

From my experience with CAMHS and training in family work.

I can offer family sessions where there are concerns regarding communication, relationships or struggles with change.

I really feel stories are important, how we present ourselves, how we view our own stories and how we tell them. I believe we are able to find meaning in a lot of things and this can at times help us to understand our own feelings or explain it to others who are able to hear the message behind what is important to us. This can be song lyrics, a scene in a film or a quote even. None the less, sometimes these points of meaning can help us explain something we struggle to otherwise articulate, feeling often unheard because others don’t understand the meaning of something to us.

I enjoy finding new and meaningful ways to work with people and because of this I work flexibility, meaning I adapt my practice to a style that matches. The therapeutic relationship is the key to positive change, and I want to be able to offer a safe and supportive space to use. This means I do regular reviews to be sure you are taking value in the work, that is feels beneficial and that it is paced and we are working effectively together.
